Mobile Learning & the Future Workforce: It is Closer Than You Think

By now, we are all well aware of the impact mobile technology has had on society. Whether it’s iPhones or tablets or the rising use of social media hashtags in marketing; the influence mobile has had on our daily lives can be seen in every direction. According to Cisco, as of end of 2013, there are more mobile devices on the earth than people.

Children of all ages and nations seem to instinctively understand how to use a mobile device; and app developers have been quick to provide thousand of apps designed to cultivate learning from even the youngest of age ranges. Research on mobile in the classroom started almost as soon as the technology was released, much like PC’s in the 1980’s, and the positive effects can be found in studies published around the world.

As we advance our view into the colleges, we find that mobile technology has become the norm from both a learning and personal development perspective.  Among student tablet owners in 2012, nearly three quarters of them feel their mobile device helps them perform better in class, according to a Pearson/Harris Interactive Student Mobile Device 2013 Study. This statistic highlights how much mobile technology has changed a generation of learners…and provides insight into their expectations for learning as they enter the business world.

While it is easy to talk about the “future workforce” and think we have plenty of time to make changes, best in class companies are evolving their learning programs to address mobile today. According to the Brandon Hall Business Focus 2014 report, mobile learning is once again a top 10 priority for the second straight year in organizations they surveyed.

Organizational leaders are recognizing that future workforce is already here.  They are filling the hourly front lines in the service industry as well as the offices all around us. While much of the discussion on Generation Y is focused on the college aged portion of this generation – the oldest of Gen Y employees will be in their mid-thirties this year, well established in their career and serving in leadership roles at many organizations.

Mobile learning is now.
