Skillsoft and SumTotal Provide Skill Development Program to Empower Women in India

Skillsoft and SumTotal remain committed to empowering women and children to reach their fullest potential

HYDERABAD, India – 23 December 2019 – Skillsoft, a global leader in corporate learning, and SumTotal, a global leader in Talent Development solutions, are providing skill development training for 20 low-income women residing in and around the Gokul Plots community nearby its Hyderabad office. As part of the latest Skillsoft and SumTotal Cares initiative, the organizations will be covering the cost of a 5-month skill development program on fashion designing and jute bag making organized with the help of the Dream for Good Society (Regd. No. 77/2011) run by Chava Aruna–a social worker who manages and runs Dream for Good Society with an objective to uplift women and children from low-income households.

With the help of this donation, the Dream for Good Society will install a saree rolling machinery unit, sewing machinery, accessories and hire an instructor to train these women for a period of five months while a new group of women will be selected to begin the training program every five months. Upon completion of the job readiness training program, eight women will be hired to work in a unit situated in the Dream for Good Society premises. The day-to-day operations and functioning of this unit will be overseen by Aruna’s team and the revenue generated from this unit will go towards protecting against child labour, providing free and quality education for children, evening classes for students that have dropped out of school and stationery for government school children. The facility, which is situated in Gokul Plots, Hyderabad has been inaugurated by the local MLA Mr. Arekapudi Gandhi on 21st December 2019.

Speaking during the recent inauguration, Mr. Ratnakar Koduru, Director of IT and CSR at SumTotal said, “With this skill development program, women are empowered to enhance their skill sets, gain valuable industry exposure and become both self-sufficient and financially independent. Through important programs like the Dream for Good Society, we can collectively help pave the path for more women to enroll and take charge of their future through skill development programs.”

Additionally, Skillsoft and SumTotal Cares will be providing 30 dormitory beds and a water purifier for children ages 8-16 at the Maruthi Old Age and Orphanage (Regd. No. 29/2008) run by Ch. Jaya. With the help of these beds, nearly 60 children will now receive a good night’s sleep and 24/7 access to clean and safe drinking water, which is essential for their well-being, health and development.

These most recent Skillsoft and SumTotal Cares initiatives build upon the organizations’ ongoing commitment to give back to the community and support social causes through local programs aimed at developing women in the workplace and aiding underprivileged youth. In 2018, Skillsoft and SumTotal partnered with the Sankalp Foundation to launch a pre-primary teacher training program for 52 women in Hyderabad. The program enabled 44 out of the 52 women to receive Pre-and Primary Teacher Training Course certifications and employment following successful completion of the program.
